My Heroes! (On That Moment) ( Momimhar posted on June 30th, 2013 )

I miss my family and friends back home.  Whenever I am alone (when DD is napping) on a hot breezy afternoon, I sit in the back porch while eating a little snack looking around the backyard and watching the vehicle passing by.  It feels like homesickness kicking in again.

I remember summer days are super hot in the Philippines.  Although rains come once in a while in the afternoons, still the heat and humidity make you sweaty.  When I was young, me, my cousins, and my friends love exploring the farms and rivers when it’s summertime and the school is out.   We look for some firewood, pick vegetables, and (when there is a chance) bath in the rivers.  If not, we just go out there and get-together enjoying three pitchers of young coconut meat mixed with condensed milk, crackers, and the juice.  We called it ‘lamaw’ in Visayan dialect.  I don’t know but nothing beats its deliciousness.  It’s one of my favorite refreshments.

One day when my cousins, a few friends, and I went to pick some firewood at a friend’s farm something frightening happened…to me.  It was getting to close to dark so we hurried home.  Carrying a sack of a few things – firewood, vegetables, coconut, and root crops – on our heads, we walked homed hurriedly.  When crossing a river, I thought the rock I stepped on was sturdy.  I slipped and the current had drawn me into the deep part.  My sack fell into the water.  I thought I will get drowned.  My older cousin and a friend immediately came to help.  My cousin got me and our friend jump for my sack.  My heroes! (On that moment). I was very scared and wet.  I never told my parents about it.  That was a bad incident one summer.  That is why I never let my siblings go up to pick firewood because crossing the rivers is dangerous.

Anyway, memories good or bad are worth remembering.  We’ll have our lessons learned.

My Darling Daughter Likes Meeting New Friends ( Momimhar posted on June 30th, 2013 )

There are few party invitations sent to us this month.  And one them is my friend and kababayan’s party for her daughter’s 2nd birthday.  (Kababayan means countryman in English).  The party was held at her house.  She organized and prepared for the special occasion.  I thought she hired a caterer but she made all the food on the table.  They were all delicious!  And she made my all-time favorite Filipino dish, Kare-Kare – it’s a peanut-based stew paired with sweet and spicy shrimp paste.  Yum!

The family had a number of guests who attended the party.  The birthday celebrant was sleeping when we arrived.  Well, of course, I bet it’s her nap time. Gladly she woke up when it was time to sing the “Happy Birthday” song and blowing of the candles.

I think the birthday girl is still sleepy. 🙂

But DD wanted to get in the bouncy bounce. So there she is.

There was a bounce house placed in the front yard of my friend’s house.  The humidity was quite high that day so I did not let my darling daughter to play in it.  It was hot humid day.  My daughter had fun at the party.  She likes making friends and playing, of course.  Being with other kids help my child to become confident and independent.  Socials skills is getting better.  The difficult part for her is saying goodbye.  My daughter didn’t want to leave because she play with the other kids some more.  I talked to her sincerely about why we needed to leave.  I am glad that she listened and understood.  She’s really a good girl.

It was another successful party, as usual.  The kids enjoyed the company, cakes, and favors or goodies.

The balloons are cute.

Play Date Schedule ( Momimhar posted on June 30th, 2013 )

My cousin and I scheduled every Thursdays as play dates for our little ones.  We picked this day because we felt like it’s our ‘free’ day of the week.  Either we meet at her house or mine, we make sure that our girls have a play time together.  Sometimes we go to a friend’s house also.  Our friend has three girls and she liked us visiting them once in while for play dates.  Ours are toddlers so they’re a mess.  🙂  Well, it’s all girls playing together so expect some screaming and crying here and there.

When my darling daughter and I went to my cousin’s house one Thursday, we made some egg pies as dessert for later.  For lunch, my cousin heated up some Broccoli beef.  But she didn’t heat it up in the microwave.  She told me that their microwave oven is broken.  She and her family just moved in their new house not even a year now and something’s wrong with the kitchen equipment already.  I thought they would need to get new microwave parts to get it fixed.

As usual, the little ones had fun playing and we, the moms, enjoyed chatting and catching up.  The lunch was great and the egg pies were delicious!  We’ll definitely bake some egg pies again.  Next play date will be at our friend’s house next week.
