Turn a Steep Slope into Enjoyable Outdoor Spaces ( Momimhar posted on November 5th, 2016 )

If your home is built on a hillside or steep slope, landscaping and outdoor activities may present a challenge. You may also encounter erosion and drainage problems that can lead to structural damage for your home. If your back yard is sloped or hilly, consider a terraced landscape with multi-level patios or decks so you can enjoy being outdoors.

Terraced Landscapes

Terraced landscapes work well for steep slopes and hilly yards. By creating multiple terraced levels you can provide easier, safer access from the yard to the house, as well as good irrigation and erosion control. Terraced levels will make the slope less steep and create different areas for outdoor entertaining. You can create a beautiful, footpath between terraced levels with wooden steps, flagstone pathways, or pavers in stone, concrete or brick that offer safe, non-slip surfaces. Landscape lighting along pathways will provide extra safety and protection after dark.

To supply adequate water to grassy areas and plants, consider a drip irrigation system instead of a sprinkler system. A drip irrigation system provides slow irrigation to plant roots and creates less runoff than traditional sprinklers. To help prevent slides, landscape with plants that will reduce irrigation needs and provide a more stable landscape.

To control erosion, plant trees, shrubs, and plants in your terraced landscape areas. Large rocks, stones and mulch around plants will also help to prevent soil erosion by reducing the amount of water that flows down the slope. Mulch helps to absorb and retain moisture for plant growth and prevent unwanted weed growth, especially in shaded areas. For best results, choose a heavier mulch like bark chips or shredded redwood. Lightweight mulches like hay and straw often wash downhill in a heavy rain.

Multi-Level Patios and Decks

Multi-level patios and decks are great for sloping or hilly yards that are difficult to use. You can build a multi-level patio or deck into the hillside and connect the levels with stairs or garden pathways. The top level should be close to the house for convenience and easy indoor access. It will provide a great area for family dinners and outdoor entertaining. The lower level, further from the house, will provide more privacy for relaxation and quiet conversations.

Multi-level patios and decks can be built in various sizes and shapes to fit your landscape terrain. For extremely steep slopes, decks offer an advantage because they can be elevated off the ground with shrubs and plants below to help with drainage and erosion problems.

If you have a sloped or hilly back yard, you don’t have to give up backyard activities. To learn more about creating a terraced landscape or building multi-level patios and decks, talk to a local contractor in your area.

Little Girls Birthday Decoration Inspiration DIY by A Friend ( Momimhar posted on October 8th, 2016 )

Kyana's birthday cake.

Kyana’s birthday cake.

A friend of mine has two adorable daughters.  The youngest just turned 1 a couple of weeks ago.  Kyana had a simple yet a very cute party.  Her mom did all the birthday party decorations.  How awesome.  The cake was nicely decorated, too.  What a talented mother Kyana has.

Do-it-yourself or DIY birthday party decor can save you a lot of money.  If you are very creative, you can make your own party decorations from extra scrapbook supplies or unused paper goods in your home.  All we have to add to the creativity is a lot of motivation and diligence to do it.  There are so many DIY inspiration and resources on the Internet.  The moment you find the perfect decor inspiration, the urge will come after.  And you do not have to buy party decor every time.

Popping the Balloons Game

Popping the Balloons Game

My darling daughter enjoyed at the party as well.  My friend prepared kids’ party games for the young guests.  K’s favorite was Popping the Balloons.  What’s funny was, the kids had to pick a certain colored balloon to pop yet they can pick whichever pretty much.  The game took a little while to finish.  🙂  Everybody got a prize though.

The cake and the food was delicious.  Everyone had a wonderful time at Kyana’s 1st birthday party.

Parenting Challenge: Be Firm ( Momimhar posted on June 2nd, 2016 )

My darling daughter is growing fast that I am almost not aware that she will be in Kindergarten this year.  Oh how I adore her being so sweet and smart.  Sometimes, but not very often, she is testing the length of my patience.  Like what happened during our vacation in the Philippines two months ago.

My niece and nephew.

My niece and nephew enjoying a night’s swim.

It was a very fine evening at the Sabin Resort Hotel.  My siblings and their kids were with us spending the weekend to swim and have fun since it’s summer vacation and the school is out.  My niece and nephews were swimming that night.  K saw them in the pool and she asked me that she wanted to join them.  I said no.  Because as you know, she already get in the pool around 4:00 P.M. and I told her that if she go swim, she’s not gonna go night swimming with her cousins after dinner.  I asked her twice if she really want to go ahead and swim without her cousins.  She said yes.  Okay.  So I let her because she insisted, and she agreed she won’t get in the pool again after dinner.

When she’s done swimming, we had dinner with the family at the resort’s restaurant.  After about an hour, my niece and nephews went ahead and swim in the pool.  K saw them having lots of fun – splashing and chasing each other.  But kids are kids, you know.  K was jealous.  She came to me and asked if she can go in the swimming pool and join her cousins.  “See.  They’re having lots of fun,” she said.  I reminded her about our agreement.  I told her that we talked about that earlier.  Calmly, I recalled everything to her.  But of course, K gave me that sweet-begging-kind of look on her face.  It was precious but I have to be firm.

She really wanted to go in the pool.

She said, “I will just sit down on the edge of the pool and feel the water on my feet.”

I said, “Not even that one.”

See our kids sometimes play tricks on us.  If we give in, we lose.  They will think that we don’t have one word.  We have to be firm on what we agreed on.  It is part of good discipline.

I am glad that my daughter didn’t fuss on that. She knew her boundaries there.  To take her attention away from the swimming cousins, I suggested we leave the pool and take a walk towards the seawall.  And guess what, we found a treasure.  A hair tie. 🙂

Blue hair tie. Finders keepers. :)
